Why do children of migrant workers often drop out of school?

Children of migrant workers face instability because their families frequently move from one job site to another in search of livelihood. When relocations happen every few months, regular school attendance becomes impossible, and children fall behind academically. Many schools require documents like proof of address, age certificates, or transfer certificates, which migrant families may not have.

Parents working long hours cannot supervise studies or ensure school attendance. In the absence of childcare, older siblings often care for younger children, causing further dropouts. Unsafe living environments near construction sites also expose children to accidents, illness, and child labour risks. Additionally, language barriers and cultural differences make adapting to new schools stressful.

Without consistent support and learning continuity, children gradually lose interest and eventually drop out. This leads to learning loss and continues the cycle of poverty. The Education Centre for Out of School Children supports migrant children with flexible education models and mobile learning centres are essential to protect their future.
